Food Waste Prevention Week is a national and statewide campaign to educate and inspire action in reducing food waste. In Washington, an estimated 1.1 million tons of food waste is generated annually, including 400,000 tons of edible food that gets disposed of in landfills. Food waste is a huge challenge with significant environmental, social, and economic impacts. We encourage all residents to observe this week by committing to reduce food waste in their homes, workplaces, and communities.

In support of Issaquah’s Food Waste Prevention Week, our Waste Zero Specialist will be at the Issaquah Highlands Safeway to talk about how you can reduce food waste, compost more, and keep your food fresh longer!

When: April 8 and 10 from 10 AM – 12 PM

Where: Issaquah Highlands Safeway, 1451 Highlands Dr NE, Issaquah, WA 98027

We will be giving away FREE outreach materials:

    • Kitchen counter compost pails
    • 25% off a single item coupon to our Issaquah Recology Store
      • Fridge magnets with food storage tips
      • Sorting guides, stickers, informational brochures, and more!

Food for thought!

    • Freeze bread, produce, and meat you know you won’t be able to eat right away for future meals.
    • Store smarter to waste less food: onions and potatoes should be stored separately to prevent sprouting and berries last longer when kept dry in a breathable container.
    • Make your own vegetable broth from vegetable scraps!
    • Make a grocery list before you go to the store so you know exactly what you need

We all face a learning curve as we create new habits. For food that goes to waste, remember composting food waste is a lot better for the environment than putting it in the garbage. All Issaquah residents have access to free compost service. Learn about what goes into compost using our sorting guides
