As we celebrate Waste and Recycling Workers Week, we are thrilled to honor two exceptional Recology drivers who have recently been recognized for their outstanding contributions to our industry. At this year’s WasteExpo, Manuel Vera (right) and Sixto Dela Cruz (left) were awarded Honorable Mentions in the prestigious 2024 Driver of the Year Awards by the National Waste & Recycling Association!

Manuel Vera, Recology Sunset Scavenger

Manuel Vera, who received the Honorable Mention in the Regional Residential category, began his career with Recology in 1990 as a recycling sorter. Over the years, he has played a pivotal role in our recycling initiatives, including being one of the first drivers to participate in San Francisco’s curbside collection of food scraps. For the past two decades, Manuel has operated a side loader, servicing residents and businesses in the Sunset.

“I love it,” Manuel said when asked about his job. “I know the people on my route by name and they know me. [During the holidays], some customers even wait in the mornings and greet me with Christmas cookies or holiday cards. It’s wonderful. I love that Recology is really about customer service and making a difference.”

Manuel’s exemplary service, safety record, and mentorship of new drivers have made him a cornerstone of the Recology family.

Sixto Dela Cruz, Recology Vacaville

Sixto Dela Cruz, honored in the Regional Commercial category, embodies the spirit of positivity and dedication. Known for his motto, “Every day is Friday!” Sixto brings joy and an unparalleled work ethic to his role. Since joining Recology Vacaville in 2006, Sixto has excelled in various roles, currently driving a roll-off truck and servicing commercial entities across Solano County.

Operations Supervisor Alfredo Aguayo commends Sixto’s commitment: “Sixto represents what Recology is about and what our industry strives for—resource recovery, taking care of customers, and getting things done in the best way possible.” With zero traffic violations in 17 years and a habit of taking extra loads and assignments without complaints, Sixto’s dedication is truly inspiring. He also contributes to the community by participating in Recology Vacaville’s drill team, which he’s been participating on for 16 years.

Both Manuel and Sixto exemplify the values of Recology, making significant contributions to their communities and setting high standards for their colleagues. As we celebrate Waste and Recycling Workers Week, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to them and all our dedicated workers who keep our communities clean and sustainable.
